Art inspires creativity, ideation and innovative breakthroughs, and of course reflection. “Creative undertakings” such as photography, sculpting, poetry, and designing and building products need vision and inspiration. Visions are fueled by ideas. And ideas evolve and are improved upon with critical thought. However, in my opinion, none of the aforementioned would exist absent inspiration.

Five years ago this month, the world lost a towering figure. Zaha Hadid’s ability to distill geometric complexities into visually stunning architectural pieces, I believe, exemplifies art in its highest form. Thankfully, her gifts to the world — her masterpieces — live on. The Kartal Pendik Urban Centre illustrations shown above, of the East Bank in Istanbul are considered controversial and the cause of “cultural” angst for some. Yet her design ethic remains an inspiration to so many. In fact, in 2004, Zaha would become the first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize for her “consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture.”

So, for those of us always on the lookout for inspiration, whether it be to fuel personal transformation or offer clients innovative solutions to their problems, this month, enter Zaha Hadid. I encourage you to become familiar with her masterpieces and coming of age story. And hopefully, her work and that of the firm she left behind, Zaha Hadid Architects, will invigorate your ideas and activities during the month of March!
